Strengthening the Honey Production Chain

Honey producers seek to conserve the Caatinga and create a honey route in the territory.

Since 2015, we support the creators (the) bees of the Nectar of the Sertão network, initiative that seeks conserve the Caatinga and strengthen local production. The Nectar do Sertão Network brings together farmers from the municipalities of Apuiarés, Pentecost and Tejuçuoca in Ceará. These breeders(the) of bees see the threat of extinction of the species and the great potential of the insect and the.

Meliponiculturers usually preserve and restore local ecosystems so that Brazilian native bees can reproduce in a healthy habitat. An example of a natural and endemic species, IE, exclusive of the Caatinga biome, is the Jandaíra (Subnined melipona). It pollinates about 30% a 60% caatinga plants, also from the Pantanal and part of the Atlantic Forest. In the Caatinga there are about 30 endemic bee species. They have a unique habitat and different characteristics from the others. They have the atrophied stinger, are smaller and darker, ranging from brown and black tones.

Through pollination, The small insect helps to maintain the flora of the biome, since it pollinates only native plant species. Its honey is considered more nutritious than the common and has medicinal applications. Despite all the importance, the species Jandaíra is threatened. It is estimated that approximately one third of it is endangered.

The (the) producers (the) of the Lagoa das Pedras community, the municipality of Apuiarés (THIS), are responsible for an environmental reserve of about 100m², where were planted several species native to Caatinga, such as aroeira, angico and pau d & #8217; arc, also known as ipê. The species were strategically designed by affinity they have with the native bee, jandaíra. Thanks to the network created, meliponicultores maintains the space in a sustainable and collaborative way.

According to our Director of Programs, Aurigele Alves, for the creation of the Nectar do Sertão Network it was necessary to organize and engage by the producers. "We support the protagonism and entrepreneurship of producers from rural communities in the Northeast and we promote sustainability through cultural valorization. With honey producers, we operate through the expansion of capacities, access to credit and cooperation between local actors", highlights.
